Yesterday morning, as I was scrolling through Instagram, a reel from Reese Witherspoon stopped me mid-scroll.
She said she often tells her own three kids to “walk with purpose in the direction you’re going.”
It’s a mantra she traces back to playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde – a character who never waited to feel ready before walking into a room. She just kept moving into new spaces, with confidence, one step at a time.
I love this so much. In my work with clients, I usually encourage them to start with a goal – to know where they’re headed before they take the first step. But this quote flipped that for me.
Purpose isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about choosing to move forward with intention, even when the path ahead isn’t completely clear.
Too often, we wait until we feel confident before taking the next step. We tell ourselves we’ll apply for the job, speak up in the meeting, or pursue the dream when we’re “ready.”
But confidence doesn’t usually come first – it grows because we take the first step.

As parents, this lesson matters even more. Our children are always watching. They learn more from how we live than from what we say. When they see us face challenges, try new things, recover from setbacks, and pursue what matters to us, they learn courage, resilience, and confidence – not from a lecture, but from example.
Purposeful parenting isn’t about being perfect. It’s about modeling what it looks like to live with purpose.
So, whether you’re starting a new career, setting healthier boundaries, going back to school, or simply stepping outside your comfort zone – remember, your children are watching. Every intentional step you take teaches them that growth often begins before confidence does.
You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going all the time. Just keep walking with purpose in the direction you’re headed.
Because one of the greatest gifts we can give our children isn’t a perfect life – it’s the example of someone with the courage to keep moving forward.
And, just like Elle Woods, and just like Witherspoon reminds her own kids: you don’t need permission to walk into the room. You just need to keep walking.
