You’re tired. Maybe more than tired — you’re exhausted.
Mentally checked out.
Questioning everything about your job.

But pause for a moment.
Ask yourself:

Am I in the wrong job… or am I burned out?

It’s a tough question to answer when you’re running on empty and emotionally drained. The signs can look remarkably similar. But knowing the difference can help you make the right move – not just a reactive one.

Let’s break it down.

Burnout: What It Really Feels Like
Burnout isn’t just about being busy or needing a vacation. It’s the result of chronic, unmanaged stress.

Some common signs include:

  • You feel emotionally exhausted — even after a weekend off.
  • You’re irritable, frustrated, or simply numb.
  • It’s hard to concentrate.
  • Your sleep, appetite, or motivation has shifted.
  • Work feels meaningless — even if it once inspired you.matches and one burning out with sad face the rest smiling

Here’s the tricky part:  burnout can happen even if you love your job.

That’s why quitting doesn’t always solve it. Sometimes, recovery means setting boundaries, getting real rest, and reconnecting with your values — not walking away entirely.

And yes, I know. When you’re burned out, even imagining recovery can feel impossible. But I can show you how.

Being in the Wrong Job: How It Shows Up
When you’re in the wrong job, the issue goes deeper than stress — it’s about misalignment.
Signs of this include:

  • You dread Mondays — not because you’re tired, but because the work feels off.
  • Your values and your company’s culture are out of sync.
  • The tasks you do day in and day out don’t excite or challenge you.
  • You constantly fantasize about doing something — anything — else.
  • Even after a restful break, returning to work fills you with anxiety.

The key difference?  Even when you’re rested, it still doesn’t feel right.

It’s not about energy anymore. It’s about fit.

Questions to Ask Yourself
To figure out whether it’s burnout or a deeper misalignment, reflect on:

  1. When was the last time I felt good about work?
If it’s been months (or years), it might be more than burnout.
  2. If I had a month off, would I feel excited to return?
If yes, it’s likely burnout. If no, you may be in the wrong role.
  3. What exactly is draining me?
Is it the volume of work — or the type of work?
  4. Have I outgrown this role or industry?
Sometimes we change — but our jobs don’t.

What to Do Next
If it’s burnout:

  • Prioritize your well-being — rest is not optional.
  • Set clear boundaries around your time.
  • Talk to someone — a coach, therapist, or mentor.
  • Avoid making big decisions from a place of depletion. Remember: decisions made in burnout often come from scarcity, not clarity.
  • Get the support you need to recover and reset.

If it’s the wrong job:

  • Get curious about what feels off.
  • Explore what kind of work does light you up.
  • Start small — think informational interviews, passion projects, or career coaching. Clarity doesn’t have to come in one big leap.

You Don’t Have to Figure It All Out Today
