On the first day of the year I received an email from Dave and Rachel Hollis with the subject line “New Year Do You.” This was the first in a series they’re putting out, which has been excellent by the way, on tips keeping you on track for the New Year regarding motivation, etc. I highly recommend you sign up for it but alas, I digress.

When I read the captioned “New Year Do You” – I thought “I have to borrow that line for the New Year!” So, in addition to my word of the year being “Purposeful,” I’ve added “Do You.”

The reason I like “Do You” so much is because regardless of what goals or plans we have for 2020 I was thinking, only by being ourselves and “doing us” can we actually be happy in working towards these goals and plans.

So, you’re probably rolling your eyes thinking – Emy, if we “do us” in working towards a great and new 2020, won’t it be more of the same ole’ same ole’?

Well – yes and no. It will continue being more of the same ole’ same ole if we don’t grow as we move through 2020. Then “doing us” yes, will keep us stale and static making reaching our goals and plans impossible.

However, and stay with me here, if we embrace change and growth in our self development and self care then we can move through 2020 reaching the milestones we set for ourselves. But the change and growth has to be consistent with who we are and what works for us. This is the only way change is possible and sustainable.

I’ll say that again – “The change and growth has to be consistent with who we are and what works for us. This is the only way change is possible and sustainable.”

We are very lucky right now because we live in a digital age where information is readily available for us. But, there can be too much information in the digital space. So, how do we know what works for us so we can change while “doing us?”

Know you – so you can do you. This means there’s only one JLo, there’s only one David Beckham – they do them and you “do you.” The wonderful thing about life is our uniqueness. Just like JLo and Beckham are unique so are you.

24 hours at the gym for JLo and Beckham is JLo and Beckham doing them. For you it may be incorporating a 20 minute walk every day and increasing it little by little.

By the end of 2020 you have a full on workout regimen that works for you.

Kale and quinoa – I love them for many reasons. But – really – it doesn’t matter why I think they’re good – if you don’t like kale and quinoa you’re not going to eat them for too long – Do You – find other high quality foods that you do like and begin incorporating them little by little into the foods you are currently eating.

By the end of 2020 you have a full on eating regimen that works for you.

Having a gratitude ritual is great. I have one. It reminds me of the things that really matter when I get up in the morning and go to bed at night, especially if I’ve had a tough day. But if you’ve never made time for a gratitude ritual – and you want to create one – begin first by opening up 5 or 10 minutes once a day and do a morning or evening one and increasing it throughout the year.

By the end of 2020 you have a full on gratitude ritual regimen that works for you.

Hydrating is important. Half our body weight in ounces is the recommendation by experts. But if you don’t drink water regularly, jumping to half your body weight in ounces is not achievable on the first day. Begin with 16 ounces and increase it every week.

By the end of 2020 you have a full on water consumption regimen that works for you.

I think you get the point. Whatever your goals or plans for 2020, DO YOU first – you’ll find that you’ll be welcoming 2021 as a NEW YOU.

OVER TO YOU:
What are your goals and plans for 2020 and how can you DO YOU while meeting them?
