Prevention Now for a Better Future…

We often hear about preventive measures related to physical health. Preventive medicine aims to prevent diseases or reduce the severity of their impact. We don’t want to wait until we are sick to take measures to take care of ourselves.

The same holds true for mental health. We prefer not to wait until we are in crisis mode to come to therapy. However, it’s more than okay to come to therapy while in a crisis. So many people get their start on their mental health journey that way.

What are some ways we can help ourselves each day before getting to that point? Well, the preventive health campaigns towards physical health talk about exercise, food, lifestyle, checkups, etc. Of course, moving our bodies to relieve stress, feeding ourselves consistently throughout the day to meet our needs, getting checkups are very important for our mental health as well.

SIGN THAT SAYS BETTER

Our mental and physical health are deeply interconnected. Building a strong foundation for mental well-being often involves less-discussed, yet essential, processes. We want to take care of ourselves mentally just as much as we do physically. So, for a better mental outlook as humans, we need the following:

Connection: We are pack animals. We need others. Connection is one of the most important needs for mental well being. Isolation is often a red flag for struggle. Connection cures.

Meditation: Take the time to sit with your active brain Let thoughts pass on by and choose to be in the here and now with no judgment and acceptance of what is. Not an easy task but a necessary one. Use guided meditations, get into a group. There are lots of ways to embrace meditation in your life.

Self-compassion: Learning how to implement self compassion in our daily lives builds a solid foundation to deal with the trials and tribulations of life and the imperfect journey of being human. How we move through mistakes and setbacks is important. When self compassion is missing, shame is waiting to take over.

Therapy: A safe space to process life. To gain insight, heal and grow. We all need this space.

Let’s prioritize mental health for a better now and a better future.
