Dr. Mark C. Smith, Psy.D is a licensed clinical psychologist who has worked in many settings including private practice. He has an extensive background working with the university student body population at Student Counseling Center and Residential Life settings. Dr. Smith has also worked in psychiatric and forensic hospitals, at a correctional institute, as well as at numerous mental health clinics. Dr. Smith holds a position as University Psychologist at Florida International University (FIU) at the Counseling and Psychological Services Center where he conducts intellectual and academic evaluations to assess challenges such as Learning Disabilities, ADHD, memory functioning and transition issues. He also has the privilege to run a process group with these students.
Dr. Smith earned his doctoral degree from Nova Southwestern University in Davie, Florida. A portion of Dr. Smith’s academic training was completed in the Child and Adolescent Depression Clinic at Nova Southeastern University; similarly, he devoted his internship year to Crestwood Center for children in Rochester, New York. As a result, Dr. Smith was able to gain more broad based experience in the treatment of children, adolescents, and their families. He is especially proficient in facilitating change in individuals who are coping with anger, anxiety, depression and attention deficit disorders. His Post-Doctoral Training was at Homestead Correctional Institution and at the South Florida Evaluation and Treatment Center and where Dr. Smith became experienced in the area of modern forensic psychology.
Dr. Smith works with children, adolescents, and adults conducting assessments, consultations and therapeutic services. He provides individuals, couples, and families therapy to enhance their day-to- day functioning and help with life challenges. Some specialty areas that Dr. Smith has are anxiety, depression, adjustment and phase of life changes, relationship challenges, ADHD and substance use/abuse. Dr. Smith offers parenting skills training and is especially adept in helping individuals cope with anger, stress, marital and family discord, pain management, and chronic diseases. In additional, Dr. Smith conducts intellectual, emotional, behavioral, and academic evaluations. He is also proficient in helping with differential diagnoses in both children and adults and enjoys conducting bariatric assessments.
Dr. Smith has had remarkable opportunity to assess the diverse South Florida community in various clinical and forensic settings, and by providing therapeutic and testing services to children and adults. He offers individual as well as group therapy in English, with special interest in anxiety disorders, anger management, mindfulness, psychosis, substance abuse, pain management, dialectical behavior therapy, chronic diseases, and in giving parenting skills training workshops and sessions.
