When you hear the phraseΒ self-care, what comes to mind? Many people picture spa days, vacations, or special treats.

While those can be forms of self-care, the reality is that true self-care is much simpler – and often more accessible – than we think.

At its core, self-care means checking in with yourself and responding to your needs in ways that help restore balance and well-being.

Because people are complex, self-care often involves three areas: mind, body, and spirit. Each area requires attention, and each can be nourished in different ways.

journalCaring for the Mind

  • When overstimulated:Β Try calming practices such as deep breathing, meditation, or simply stepping away from screens for a few minutes.
  • When under-stimulated:Β Engage in activities that challenge or inspire you, like reading a novel, doing a puzzle, learning something new, or being creative.
Taking time to reflect on what your mind needs can prevent burnout and improve focus.

Caring for the Body

  • When tired:Β Prioritize rest. This may look like taking a short nap, soaking in a warm bath, or practicing gentle stretching.
  • When restless:Β Incorporate movement. A walk, a workout, or even dancing to your favorite song can help restore energy and improve mood.

Listening to your body’s signals and responding with rest or activity is a simple but effective form of self-care.

Caring for the Spirit

  • When disconnected:Β Reconnect through prayer, journaling, meditation, or spending time in nature.
  • When seeking meaning:Β Engage in community service, practice gratitude, or nurture your relationships.

Tending to your spirit can bring a sense of peace, purpose, and fulfillment.

Making Self-Care Work for You
Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated, costly, or time-consuming. It’s not about perfectionβ€”it’s about awareness and consistency. Start small by asking yourself simple check-in questions each day:

  • Mind, what do you need?
  • Body, what do you need?
  • Spirit, what do you need?

By pausing to reflect and taking even small actions, you create sustainable habits that support your overall well-being.

This September, in honor of Self-Care Awareness Month, consider setting aside just a few minutes each day to listen to your inner needs.

The answers may surprise you, and they may be exactly what you need to feel balanced, grounded, and whole.
